1st Project meeting in Greece – 1st Primary School of Kos

The first meeting in Greece was successful. The Greek school “1st Primary school of Kos“ organized the whole program successfully. The participants were: from Lithuania Ms MONTVILIENE’ EDITA and Ms KANCERIENE RITA and two students

On Monday morning, the first day of the project, we went to school and we welcomed our guests with local drinks and snacks. We had a welcoming speech by our headmistress Maria Psyri and the coordinator of the project Ms Emily Sichari. The Greek pupils welcome the guests and then we had presentations and videos from all partner schools.We presented our school life showing innovative ways of teaching various subjects.The teachers who presented were Ms Baimakou Efi,Ms Nikoleta Mastorou, Ms Vagianou Ourania, Mr Koutsikas Leonidas.Ms Eleftheriadou Maria showed our guests how to prepare a traditional meal, like “tiropita”, which is a cheese pie. The parents association prepared a lunch for all guests with many local meals, salads and sweets.A local dancing association presented traditional local dances and induced everyone into participating in dancing, teaching with dancing steps.We had the 1st project meeting at school where all six coordinators discussed about the details of the project. In the afternoon we went to Therma water springs where our guests had a relaxing time in the hot waters.Later in the evening we had a Greek night with teachers,students and parents.
On Tuesday, the second day of the project, we went to school and we had a teaching activity by Emily Sichari the English teacher and Coordinator of the project,in a classroom about Greek language and learning Greek with words and dialogues.Later,we visited Asclepiion ancient venue where we were guided around by students of Antimacheia's High school in English and we watched Hippocrate's oath ceremony.Later,we visited Triandafillopoulou wine distillery and learnt a lot about how wine is distilled and how great a variety of wines there is in Kos. Moreover,the quality of the local wine tasted nothing like the ordinary. Zia was the next stop for traditional lunch and wandering of the beautiful streets of the village.Breathtaking was the sunset.Later at night we had a drink out just for a small taste of Kos nightlife.
On Wednesday, the third day of the project, we had an early departure for an excursion to Kefalos village.We visited "Mylotopi" area where we saw an old traditional local house and the everyday equipment people used at the time.We visited a splendid windmill and learnt about its use.Then,"Katimeria",the delicious traditional pastries made by a local lady were displayed in their production while their taste was unique.Our next destination was "Melissa" a family business of honey extraction.We were informed about the process of honey extraction.We tasted various flavors of honey and were acquainted with the many wax products.Then,all students and teachers had a wonderful lunch in Antimacheia where we tasted the traditional "souvlaki".Students got together and had a wonderful time socializing.Although the weather didn't help with the rain pouring, we finally managed to walk through the old town of Kos,shop and experience its unique beauty and locals' hospitality.
On Thursday, the forth day of the project in the morning, we had more teaching activities at school,showing innovation in learning and teaching.In particular Mr Panagiotis Kapiris,Ms Dakoronia Kristi and our music teacher Ms Katerina Chande presented classes to groups of teachers and students.Later, we visited archaeological sites and monuments in Kos town.A welcoming experience to the Mayor's office was impressive leaving us with presents and souvenirs.Our route went on for the oil press where we were told a lot about olive oil extraction and oil products.We enjoyed our meal in a local restaurant.We had a 2nd project meeting at the hotel where we discussed details about the dates of the meetings and about the next meeting in Italy.
On Friday,we attended the national anniversary of the 28th October presentation from the third graders at the school assembly hall and a closing event of certificate awards followed.Then,we watched the deposit of wreaths in the three monuments in Kos town.After a short snack we visied the town's marina where the clients informed us about marina's' importance and its use.Later in the afternoon parents,teachers and students enjoyed a bowling game.A splendid Greek night at Michelangelo hotel followed.
On Saturday, we had a day trip to Nisiros island.We saw the still active volcano of the area,learnt a lot about the island by a native teacher Mr Dimitris Chasapladakis, visited the Mayor of the island, we saw traditional outfits and tasted extraordinary traditional local food.We also visited the breathtaking christian orthodox church of "Panagia Spiliani".We walked through the old town of Nisiros while the architecture of the island confirmed the passing of pirates of the time.
